5 Reasons Why All Nurses Should Work As CNAs First

Jumping into nursing is a scary business especially when you’re starting clinical with zero experience. That’s why beginning your medical career as a CNA is a smart move. Though you’ll be starting at the bottom of the chain you’re going to get the experience and confidence to make you a great nurse. Being a CNA may be hard physical work but it’s an incredibly satisfying way to dip your toe into the medical profession.

1. Find Out If Nursing Is Really For You

Working as a CNA is a low-commitment way to see if working in the medical profession is what you really want. You have to love people plus have an iron-clad stomach; sometimes the only way to find out is to get in there and try it. Training to become a CNA is less expensive and less time consuming than for RNs. You can even do it part-time while working elsewhere or studying. If you decide a medical career isn’t for you, you’ve wasted less time and money. But we’re pretty sure that you’ll love it.

2. You’ll Be Prepared

Nursing students who’ve been CNAs first tend to be much more comfortable when it comes to clinicals. You’ll have already done all the basic tasks such as emptying catheters and colostomy bags, bathing, and changing/ turning patients plus you’ll have some knowledge of swallowing problem, oxygen, and feeding tubes. You’ll also be building the organizational and prioritization skills that are so prized in nurses. With this training under your belt you’ll be well primed to take your work to the next level.

7 Low Stress Jobs To Consider ASAP!

Pulling your hair out at the sight of another email from the boss? The American Institute of Stress survey found that 77% of Americans routinely experience physical symptoms triggered by stress; 76% identified their professional life and their finances as leading causes of their anxiety.
When it comes to identifying low-stress jobs, the AIS points out that every individual has different needs. Each person’s ideal office environment is unique, so it’s difficult to formulate a composite of a low-stress job that is applicable to all workers. One source of tension that the institute identifies for employees has to do with their level of control on the job. The AIS found “workers who perceive they are subjected to high demands but have little control are at increased risk for cardiovascular disease.”

If you are looking to lighten your stress load, consider these roles.

  1. Speech Language Pathologist
  2. Freelance Writer
  3. Personal Trainer
  4. Baker
  5. Archivist
  6. Optometrist
  7. Barber

Demystifying Lab Values

Laboratory values reflect the overall health of an individual. They are generally used for diagnostic purposes, or for monitoring the effects of medications or other medical treatments. Having a basic understanding of laboratory values may help occupational therapists better understand changes in occupational performance, and help therapists determine when therapy should be modified or deferred.

Having a basic understanding of common laboratory values can help therapists determine when therapy is contraindicated or the therapeutic approach needs to be modified. Therapists should verify patient status with medical staff and use sound clinical judgment in weighing the risks, benefits, and appropriateness of occupational therapy interventions when lab values fall outside the normal reference range.
